National Overseas Scholarship Scheme is a scheme started by the Union Minister of India for the students belong to Scheduled Caste category. Under this scheme 100 SC students will get scholarship to study abroad. This scheme is for the research based studies like PhD and so. Each candidate will be able to receive $33,000+ for their studies under this scheme.

The scheme was launched by the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. For the session 2018-19, application forms are being collected.

Last Date For Registration

Last date for applying for the scholarship is 31st March 2018. Through their official website candidates are required to apply for the scheme. The official portal is http://www.socialjustice.nic.in/.

Key Features

  • Aim: The scheme aims to encourage students from background category to pursue their higher studies abroad. Financial assistance is given to the needy people for pursuing their higher studies in colleges and universities abroad.
  • Benefits: Under this scheme the candidates can study Post Graduate and research based studies. The scholarship amount does not include conference, workshop or seminars and such.
  • Beneficiaries: The scheme is launched for 100 SC contenders. They have to finish their Masters or equivalent to receive benefits of the scheme. Scholarship will be provided to them until they finish their research.
  • Mode of Application: Application will be done through offline mode. Applicants are required to fill the form online and then send the hard copy along with required documents to the official postal address of the social justice ministry.
  • Minimum Qualification: Candidates who are pursuing Post Graduation (or Master’s degree) will have to secure 55% marks in Bachelor’s degree finals or equivalent examination. On the other candidates who are willing to pursue PhD will have to secure 55% in Masters’ degree or equivalent.
  • No of Seats: There are 100 SC candidates who will get benefitted from the scheme. 90 scholarships are available for candidates belong to SC category, 6 scholarships are available for the candidates Denotified, Semi-Nomadic Tribes and for Landless Agricultural Labourers 4 scholarships are available under this scheme.

Eligibility Criteria For The Scholarship Scheme

  • Age of the candidate must not be more than 35 years as on dated 1st April 2017. Students who are aged more than that will not be eligible for the scheme. The candidate must be Indian citizen.
  • Annual income of the candidates’ family must not be more than Rs. 6 Lac per year. Note that, the income mentioned here is family income not individual income.
  • Candidates have to secure the mentioned marks in previous examinations to register for the scheme. Failing to secure this marks can cancel the registration of the candidate at any point of time.

Documents For Registration

  • Age Proof: The candidate has to submit Matriculation certificate which should be self attested as the age proof of the candidate.
  • Income Proof: Candidates are required to submit income certificate or pay slip of the earning member(s) of the family in support of the income of the family.
  • Category: Whether the candidate belongs to SC category or not must be informed by the candidate. A scheduled caste certificate, issued by competent authority must be submitted along with the application form.
  • Mark Sheet: Applicants are needed to attach the mark sheets and certificates of his/her previous degrees / diplomas with the application form. All the marks sheets and certificates must be self attested.
  • Additional document: The student has to produce additional documents on Passage Grant and merit scholarship documents as well.
  • Letter of award: Finally a letter of award in the name of the candidate must be produced at the time of application. It must be self attested by the candidate.

  • The candidates are required to visit the official website http://www.socialjustice.nic.in/. In the Home page select the option “National Overseas Scholarship Scheme” under the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Click on the ‘Advertisement of National Overseas Scholarship Scheme’ to get the details of the scheme. It will appear in PDF format. The form will be available in the PDF file along with the scheme guidelines.
  • Read the guidelines carefully before applying for the scheme. All the rules and regulations must be followed by the applicants. Download the form from the PDF file to apply.
  • Form must be filled with correct and mandatory information about the candidate. Now take the print out of the form and send the hard copy along with the photocopy of the documents mentioned above to the following address,

Things to know – Important Facts

  • Applicants who are applying for Masters’ degree will get scholarship for 3 years. Those who are applying for PhD will get scholarship for 4 years.
  • Candidates who didn’t get admitted to any universities yet, can apply for the scheme, once they get offer letter they can receive the scholarship.
