Now that the Paralympics are taking place, India this time has also been successful in attaining position in it. And all the credit goes to the popular para high jumper Varun Bhati. The man who proved where there is a will, there is definitely going to be a way. Varun Bhati is India’s one of the top athletes who won the bronze medal in Rio Paralympics high jump. Varun Bhati is a resident of greater Noida whose inherent talent was spotted in St. Josephs School. The former national athlete of India, Mr. Satyanarayana nurtured his talent and will to perform in Paralympics.

It must be mentioned that Varun was immensely supported by GoSports Foundation throughout the program. The best part of Varun was, he managed to make the right balance between sports and education. He made great progress in both. He was affected by polio in his childhood days, but still he was so interested in sports that he took sports very seriously and gradually became better in it. At the IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania, Varun recorded a jump of 1.82m. He won gold and set a new Asian record. This performance was much better than the gold winning jumper at the 2015 World Championship. Considering India’s top prospects of paralympic games, he is definitely one of them.
The record performances of Varun Bhati
In the Rio Paralympics of 2016, Bhati jumped his personal best of 1.86 meters but he finished the third. He is presently pursuing his bachelor’s degree from Delhi University and has already represented India in different international events. He was registered in “A” qualification mark in the 2012 Paralympics in London where his performance was 1.60m jump. Though he made a remarkable performance, because of the limited slots availability for India, he didn’t have the opportunity to perform any more. He was also a part of the Indian team for the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon. He came 5th. In the para world championship of 2015, he came 5th again in Qatar. He performed better than the established Indian Para Jumpers like HN Girisha and Sharad Kumar.
The help from the government of India
It was announced by the sports ministry that the government is going to offer a helping hand for the Indian Paralympic performers. And now the government will be offering Rs 75 Lakh for the gold medal winners of Paralympics, 50 Lakh for the silver winner and 30 Lakh for the bronze medal winners. This is a really great announcement for the performers of Paralympics and will encourage them to pursue a career in Paralympics.
